OBJECTIVE: To develop and pilot-test a peer counselling program for commercial sex workers as an AIDS prevention strategy. METHODS: A total of 325 Ss from 32 establishments in Mandaluyong participated in the study. Sixteen of 32 establishments were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the other 16 est. to the control group. Only the experimental group was exposed to peer counselling. Baseline data of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors were gathered as well as prevalence of STD and incidence of HIV infection. RESULTS: Partial results of the baseline data showed that 78% of the samples had STD but no one was HIV positive. Peer counsellors reported that sex workers expressed desire to see pictures of AIDS patients for better understanding. DISCUSSION: Full involvement of club managers and owners is very critical in launching a project like this. Future models should consider turnover of sex workers and unsustained peer counselling efforts.
