On Thursday, May 31, Ambassador Frank Baxter
visited the city of Mercedes in Soriano. This is the third
of a series of visits to Uruguay's interior by the ambassador
since he assumed post 5 months ago. On January 3-4, Ambassador
Baxter visited Canelones, San Jose and Colonia, and on May
29 he visited the city of Minas. (See related

Ambassador Baxter's schedule in Mercedes
included a private meeting with the governor of Soriano,
Guillermo Besozzi, followed by a press conference and visits
to the Uruguayan-American School of Mercedes, the Alianza
Binational Center and the local English immersion public
school. Ambassador Baxter received a warm welcome from the
directors, teachers and students of these isntitutions,
and held informal discussions with them about their projects
and activities.
Ambassador Baxter also visited areas in
Mercedes affected by recent flooding and spoke with some
of the victims. On May 11, 2007 the U.S. Government announced
a 50,000 dollar donation to help alleviate the suffering
of the thousands of people who have had to evacuate their
homes as a result of the severe weather that has affected
many regions of Uruguay. (See related
