On August 3rd,  twelve officers from the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation attended a commemorative event for the Warsaw Uprising.  This year marks the 64th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.  In 1944, the grueling 63-day Warsaw Uprising, displayed the incredible courage, determination, dedication and sacrifice of the Polish people to freedom and to each other.  President Lech Kaczynski presided over the event and in his remarks he said, “We don’t recall the defeat, we revere the heroes.” Several Uprising heroes were honored at the event including Captain Jerzy “Magik” Bartnik, Virtuti Militari, who was awarded the Order of the Commando Cross for the Rebirth of Poland.  Captain Bartnik, who is a U.S. citizen and friend to the American Embassy personally invited the Embassy delegation to participate in the important event.  The Embassy’s delegation was led by Colonel Timothy Burke, Chief, Office of Defense Cooperation and included five U.S. Army Noncommissioned officers from the State of Illinois who are in Poland to participate with Polish soldiers in the annual Pilgrimage to Czestochowa.
