Process

2002: The North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, Version 1 is published. Expert assessment of the conservation status of colonial and semi-colonial breeding waterbirds is presented but assessment of solitary-nesting waterbirds (nicknamed "marshbirds") is deferred.
January 2005: The Waterbird Conservation Council charges its Technical Services committee to complete the status assessment of marshbirds by January 2006.
July 2005: Solicitation to participate in marshbird status assessment process sent to compiled list of species experts and waterbirds network.
August 2005: First drafts of species profiles sent to selected species experts for review.
September 2005: Profiles edited based on comments, workshop arrangements finalized.
October 2005: Species profiles and summary tables circulated for broad review, and workshop held October 15 to calibrate and perform a second round of review.
November/December 2005: Comments on workshop output solicited until November 15 and incorporated into profiles and summary tables, finalizing assessment in most cases.
February 2006: Additional round of review for select species due to new information from Canadian partners.
March 2006: Finalization of marshbird status assessment.
