When are you going to do some more? Try it out and page Mary or me if you have trouble. Jean (pager 630-218-3081) -------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Calibrating the DACs on Compact Port Cards Last Modified: April 13, 2000 File: fnalu ~slaughte/dac.txt for now ------------------------------ 1. Hook up the CPC under test to the bench top PS junction card 1. attach the CPC to the cooling plate. Its not necessary for the cooling to be on - as long as you don't turn on the 2V DOIM. (see below) 2. Move the FIB PCA command cable and CPC-junction card cable to the rightmost junction card. 3. Attach the 3 connectors of CPC-junction card cable to the CPC 4. Attach the breakout board with labelled pins to the CPC channel you are testing. Put 3 "extenders" on GND2, DVDD, CALOUT so that a DVM can be attached to DBDD-GND2 and CALOUT-GND2. 5. Locate the 3 power supplies labeeled 1,2,3 on the shelf above the junction cards. AVDD is output 1, DVDD is output 2. Attach the banana plug for the channel you are testing. See diagram above for numbering scheme. ( assumes production CPCs) Note blue and orange color coding and make sure ground ( black wire) goes to ground on the PS. 6. the DOIM cables do not need to be connected to the OFTM. 2. Running the power supplies A. Overview of programable power supply - number 3 Power supply 3 has 3 outputs, and 4 memory locations. We only use outputs 1 and 2. Each memory location stores the voltage setting and a maximum current setting for all 3 outputs. The purpose of the memories is to allow you to turn on the outputs in a given sequence. We use memory locations 1,2,3: Voltages are: Memory output 1(AVDD) output 2( DVDD) output 3 1 0.0 0.0 0.0 2 7.0 0.0 0.0 3 7.0 5.0 0.0 Note the difference between the power switch and the "on" switch on the upper right side. Never turn off the power switch. When the "on" is off, you can use the front panel to look at the memory settings and program them. When the "on" is "on", you use the front panel to see the actual values of voltage and current and you can change the voltages on channels. Note the display on the upper right. The numbers in the column on the left tell you what OUTPUT you are looking at. The "shift" button and the buttons on the right allow you to change what OUTPUT you are looking at. The upper right light tells you "on" or "off". Note the display on the far left. This tells you which MEMORY location you are currently at. The "recall last" and "recall previous" buttons cycle through memory locations. B. Actual operation 1. turn on PS 1 2. Turn on PS 2 ( only if you have cooling!!) - not needed!!! 3. check that you are in MEMORY location 1 in the screen at upper left. Use recall next/previous if necessary to see a "1" there. 3. Turn on PS 3 using "on" botton on the extreme upper right 4. push recall next - to MEMORY location 2 5. push recall next - to MEMORY location 3 6. check the voltage and currents on OUTPUTS 1 and 2 using the shift key and bottons on the right side. The output is displayed on the left of the right hand screen output 1 - AVDD - 7 V and "0" ma output 2 - DVDD - 5 V and 38 ma 3. Setup DAQ if needed. 1. harv4, cd cpc_test, source setup.csh, svxdaq &, init system Chips will not init as there aren't any, so ignore them. 2. click on FIB page ( left side on main memo) click on DAC tab 3. Calibration procedure 1. Attach DVM to DVDD and GND2. Make sure PS 3 is looking at OUTPUT 2, use shift key if needed. Use volts up/down buttons to adjust DVDD on the DVM to 5.0 volts. 2. Move DVM to CALOUT 3. On the FIB DAQ page find the channel number 0-4. Type in the DAC value you want, then click "WRITE". Record the value on the DVM on the sheet. 4. repeat step 3-3 for each DAC value: 0, 5, 10, 15 5. repeat process for each CPC channel. Note you will have to 1. power down the poser supplies: a) recall last untill you are on MEMORY location 1 b) push to "off" on upper right c) turn off 2 - if on d) turn off 1 2. switch banana plugs on PS 3 to new channel 3. move breakout board to next channel 4. turn on power supplies 5. set dvdd at DVM to 5.0 v 6. repeat CAlOUT cycle Jean Slaughter Yale University E791/CDF MS 122 Fermilab, Batavia, IL 60510 630-840-3993/3707/8630
