I have noticed innacuracies in my credit reports about addresses and employment.
The information is clearly coming from loans that my son, in college, has
obtained with me as co-signer and from the Post Office forwarding information I
submitted at the time of my divorce. I have written to the 3 agencies disputing
the addresses, and nothing was done. It makes it look like I move every year,
when in reality I have stayed in one place for 10 years. It is pure laziness on
the part of the loan processors, my address, different from my son's, is listed
on his applications. For me to correct these things, I'd have to submit all
kinds of paperwork, the underlying assumption by the Credit Bureaus being that I
am less likely to be trustworthy than the banks.
It is also very wrong that Credit Bureau information is used for employment and
for insurance. The information is perhaps valid for credit decisions, and for
some specific credit inaccuracies, the information was corrected. But I refuse
to volunteer my personal information to some company that is going to sell it to
anyone who will pay for it. If someone needs to know my address or where I work
or how much I make, they can ask me. I am an honest citizen, I have not commited
any crimes, I pay my bills, and I contribute to my community, but I have to
worry about what some nameless informant says to the Credit Bureau about me, and
jump through hoops to get it corrected.
At a time when there is heightened concern about Identity theft, there should be
much more attention paid to this blatent invasion of privacy. Companies buy and
sell personal information to make money. The College Board does it, the banks
and retail credit offers do it, and I don't know who else. My personal
information should remain private.
