General Distribution: 'Me Dakotas and Montana, S. to Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. Distribution in New Mexico: Nearly statewide. Habitat: Primarily sandy areas. Host: Forbs, grasses. Adults Present: July-September. Notes: Male cerci narrower at middle, somewhat bone-shaped; pronotum with a distinct pale stripe on each side; hind tibiae green or red; tegmina long; distinguished from M. packardii by details of male aedeagus. Not economically important. A possibly distinct species closely related to foedus is Melanoplusjluviatilis Bruner. Specimens from the Rio Grande bottoms near Albuquerque may belong to this species. Fluviatilis keys to foedus but may differ in being rougher and smaller and by its riparian habitat. The status ofj7uviatilis is uncertain. Reference: Helfer 1953, Capinera and Sechrist 1982.
