Description:
Abstract:
Version 2.2 of the Plant Fossil Record (PFR2.2) database includes descriptions and occurrences of more than 10,000 extinct plant genera. Modern genera with fossil species are included in the description database. Names, places and ages can be searched and the occurrences are instantly plotted on a palaeogeographic maps. Patterns of migration and evolution through geological time can be clearly examined to help better understand the history of climatic and environmental change.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Plant Fossil Record database is to provide descriptive details of most plant fossil genera and of those modern genera which have fossil species.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The biological, geological and geographical aspects of these data have been obtained directly from the scientific literature or from museum collections. Please understand that the records have not been checked as "correct" identifications, locations or age determinations, and are as they were published. The user, must take responsibility to justify their reliability. Genus Directory" lists names to help plan search requests.

Completeness_Report:
Most valid plant fossil genera published before 1985 are included, as are many informal and other kinds of names. They are all quoted from the literature. Browsing the list gives an overview of the diversity within the plant kingdom through geological time. But be aware that the organs of plant fossils are found separately and so they have different names - one extinct plant may have fossilized parts creating five or more names. This database contains descriptive details of the type specimens of more than 10,000 extinct plant genera. The Field Headings were established by the "Frankfurt Declaration" of IOP in 1990 and the details comprised the first version of this database, PFR1, which was published in 1992. Most Field Headings are blank, and do not show here, and most genera described since 1985 are missing. Please send complete data on new genera to the IOP office.

Process_Description:
The International Organisation of Palaeobotany (IOP) manages this Plant Fossil Record database (PFR). This version, PFR2.2, has descriptive details of most plant fossil genera and of those modern genera which have fossil species. It also has records of some fossil occurrences, taken from the published literature or museum catalogues. The occurrences give geographical and stratigraphical information as well as the name of the author.

This informal system of vascular plant classification is based on C.J. Cleal 1993 ("The Fossil Record 2", Chapman & Hall, London) for pteridophytes and gymnosperms, and on R.K. Brummitt 1992 ("Vascular Plant Families and Genera" Royal Botanic Gardens, 804pp) for angiosperms. Form-genera are those taxa that cannot be assigned to a family or a taxon of higher rank. Clealopsida are informal names for groups referred to in Cleal 1993.
