This study is being conducted at the Sand Creek, Little Wolf, Blue Retro, and Perkins Creek density management areas established by the BLM in the Oregon Coast Range. In each stand the advanced regeneration was released after a thinning that occurred over 10 years ago. Recently, the study areas were rethinned to 40-60 trees per acre leaving an area of equal size as a control. All stands have natural regeneration of primarily Douglas-fir and western hemlock in the understory. Three transects were installed in both the rethinned area and the control. Transects were spread throughout the area, but were in locations with enough regeneration to get an adequate sample. In each transect 100 trees were selected and tagged. Trees were selected by establishing a transect line and selecting the first 100 trees within 7.5 meters of the transect line on both sides. Trees that were overtopped by other trees were not chosen. The length of the transect line was dependent upon the amount of regeneration in the area. Variables collected for each tree included: species, basal diameter, diameter at breast height, total height, height to live crown, height growth, and logging damage. Little Wolf and Sand Creek were measured in 1998, Blue Retro in 1999, and Perkins Creek will be installed and measured in 2000. Diameter and height growth will be recorded at 2-year intervals for 4 years or more. Growth rates will be related to initial tree size, crown characteristics, and damage.
