The New Orleans Mayor's Office of Environmental Affairs, the New Orleans
Department of Sanitation, and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources
have teamed up with the public to recycle and reuse trees picked up after
the holidays. The Department of Sanitation collected over 15,000 trees
from residents in January 2004. With the cooperation of the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, these trees will be placed in Bayou Sauvage National
Wildlife Refuge on March 23rd, 24th and 25th to create animal habitat and
revegetate the marsh in order to lessen the impacts of flooding and storm
surges. The Louisiana Air National Guard has offered their assistance in
transporting the trees to the refuge via helicopter.

Volunteers are needed to place 300 bundles of trees in the marsh. The
helicopter ground team and the airboat team will need volunteer assistance.
There is also a need to prepare and help serve lunch for the work crew and
volunteers. Activities begin at 8 a.m. each day and are planned to occur
on the 23rd and 24th. The 25th is a weather date. There will be an
information and safety meeting at the Louisiana Air National Guard's
Lakefront Airport on March 16th, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Volunteers are
asked to call or email if they plan to participate in the event.

To volunteer or receive additional information call 504-565-8115 or send an
email to heathers@new-orleans.la.us
