    APS produces first x-rays

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) produced its first x-ray beams from the storage ring at 7:13 a.m. March 26, signaling a major milestone in the construction of this premier center for materials science research.

"First light" at the APS came nearly a year ahead of schedule. The project remains within budget.

"We are now ready to generate beams powerful enough to see the molecular structure of the most complex materials that nature or man can produce," said David Moncton, associate laboratory director for the APS.

The APS facility includes a series of highly sophisticated particle-beam accelerators, which can supply either electrons or positrons to a beam-storage ring two-thirds of a mile in circumference. As these particles orbit through magnetic fields at nearly the speed of light, they emit x-ray beams.

Commissioning (the technical term for the process of bringing the complex machine into operation) of the APS began on Saturday, March 18. At 1:55 a.m. on March 25, a beam of electrons with an energy of 4.5 billion electron volts was brought into sustained orbit inside the storage ring. The beam was maintained for 15 minutes while the electrons orbited the storage ring approximately 250 million times, a total distance of approximately 172 million miles. Then, on March 26, with all of the myriad APS systems functioning satisfactorily, x-ray beams were recorded inside an optics enclosure located on the experiment hall floor.

Fifteen teams of researchers, totaling more than 600 principal investigators from industry, universities, research laboratories, and medical schools, are preparing for experimentation that will begin in 1996. These teams will invest a total of $200 million in the construction of 40 x-ray beamlines at the APS. Experiments will cover a broad range of scientific disciplines, including materials science, biology, physics, chemistry, geoscience, environmental science, and agricultural science. The APS's x-ray beams will allow scientists to study smaller samples, more-complex systems, faster reactions and processes, and gather data at a greater rate and level of detail than has been possible to date.

    High school students to visit
    for technical careers conference

Nearly 400 young women from 70 Chicago-area high schools will learn about technical careers from women scientists and engineers at Argonne's eighth annual "Science Careers in Search of Women" conference Friday, April 7.

"We want them to learn that fulfilling lives can go along with satisfying and challenging careers in science and technology," said Betsy Curlin (ES), Women in Science and Technology (WIST) program Initiator.

"They'll meet and talk with women who have built successful technical careers and see that these careers can be good options for some of them too," Curlin said.

The program includes speakers, panel discussions, lab tours and information booths on science careers. Over lunch, more than 60 women scientists and engineers will discuss personal experiences and careers with student groups. Keynote speaker will be Diana Dabby of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Topics for panel discussions will be "College and Beyond," "Making It in Science," "Gender Equity," and "Science Careers for the 21st Century."

Booths will provide information on careers in engineering, physics, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, computers and statistics. Booth sponsors include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Society for Women Engineers, the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society for Quality Control, and several Argonne divisions.

The workshop is sponsored by Argonne's Division of Educational Programs and Affirmative Action Office, the University of Chicago Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory, and the Science and Technology Center for Superconductivity.

    Lunch service will begin, ends
    15 minutes early for conference

Lunch service at the Building 213 Cafeteria will begin 15 minutes early -- 11 a.m. -- on Friday, April 7, and end at 12:15 p.m.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m., the cafeteria will host about 400 high school women and Argonne employees for the "lunch with a scientist" portion of the "Science Careers In Search Of Women" conference.

Regular service hours will resume on Monday, April 10.

    `Travel mugs' are back

Popular "travel mugs" decorated with an environmental logo and the laboratory's name will be sold in the Building 213 cafeteria at lunch time beginning Monday, April 3.

Mugs will be sold as long as the supply lasts. The previous order of 1,000 sold out in three days.

The 22-oz. mugs cost $1.25 each and can be filled with hot coffee or any other dispenser beverage, like soda, for 65 cents. There will be no free refills.

A portion of the cost of mugs has been donated to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving natural resources.

    Maternity, prenatal care information offered

Argonne's Preventive Health and Wellness Program will offer a series of seminars on maternity wellness and prenatal care from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from April 5 through May 10.

Titled "Babies and You," the seminars will be held in Building 202, room B169. The first topic will be "Preparing for Pregnancy." Other topics will include, "Eating and Fitness for Two" and "Coping With Stress During Pregnancy."

Presented by the March of Dimes, the sessions are free for all laboratory and DOE employees and their family members.

    HR to present software classes

Classes in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software for Macintosh computers will be held the week of April 10.

Class size is limited to 12. Cost is $150 per class, and employee must furnish appropriate divisional overhead account. All classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Building 362, room E188.

    * "Microsoft Word 6.0 for Macintosh: intermediate Tools and Techniques" will be held Tuesday, April 11.

    * "Excel 5.0 for Macintosh: Intermediate Tools & Techniques" will be held Wednesday, April 12.

    * Powerpoint 4.0 for the Macintosh will be held Thursday, April 13.

See the Human Resources Program and Course Guide for complete class descriptions. For more information, call ext. 2-3410.

Alternates needed for `River to River Relay'

Alternate runners are needed for a team of Argonne employees will participate in the River to River Relay April 22, starting from the Mississippi River and going to the Ohio River with 8-person teams.

Each person runs 10 miles total, in three segments, for a team total of 80 miles. Vans transport and pick up the runners as they finish their segments.

For more information, call team coordinator Paul Eident (CHM), at ext. 2-3579 or send a message by fax to ext. 2-4470

    Blood drive details en route

A blood drive to benefit Life Source Blood Services is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25.

The medical department will be sending notices to all employees asking those interested in making a donation to schedule an appointment.

Life Source Blood Services provides more than 400,000 units of blood and blood components a year to nearly 60 affiliated hospitals. In order to meet patients needs, Life Source must collect more than 220,000 units of whole blood yearly, approximately 600 units per day.
