Silver Bridge Collapse Slide

Although many states such as California and New York had instituted bridge inspection programs since the 1920’s, it was not until December 1967 that the critically important issue of bridge safety was brought into national focus.

This Eye bar chain suspension bridge failed suddenly and catastrophically in December of 1967. There were 46 fatalities.

Questions were asked such as: how many bridges like this are there in the country? Can this happen again? What are you doing to prevent these types of failures? What are you doing to ensure the safety of the nation’s bridges?

We did not have satisfactory answers to these questions.
