Swedish plant breeding company and Finnish plant biotechnology research laboratories collaborate to improve malting barley.

The plant breeding company, Svalöf AB from Sweden, and Helsinki University Biotechnical Institute together with VTT Biotechnical Laboratory from Finland signed a research contract to improve malting barley. The three year project aims to develop a method for transferring a betaglucanase gene to malting barley to improve filtrability of wort and stability of beer. The gene has been isolated from Trichoderma reesei at VTT Biotechnical Laboratory in collaboration with Oy Alko Ab.
