Dear Colleagues,

Our discussion on citizenship covered a variety of topics such as culture,
language learning, unlearning, assimilation, salad bowl, melting pot, etc.
In addition to ideas many of you presented, I would recommend traveling
to a far away land and discovering more about its culture, customs and people
as an in-service/professional development for us ESL teachers.  There are
many good programs that offer such journeys with an emphasis on cultural
immersion, people connection, international exchange…. Experience
shows, when we discover a land, people, culture, value system and lifestyle
that is different from our own, we discover more about us, our land, culture,
value system, lifestyle etc.  Becoming aware of our own culture, value
system, priorities, etc and those of our students is one way to prepare
ourselves for effective classroom interaction.
