AIDS Media Watch.

Riyadi SR; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 2002 Jul 7-12; 14: abstract no. E11482.

Slamet Riyadi, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

ISSUES: In Indonesia there are 1687 print media, 12 television stations, and more than 1100 radio stations (SPS, 2000). Therefore, without any network to monitoring HIV/AIDS news in mass media, stigmatisation, discrimination and HIV/AIDS myths will go out of controlled. As a result HIV/AIDS problem will be put aside. The targets of the program, which is funded by The Ford Foundation, are NGOs, which concern about HIV/AIDS care and prevention. Hopefully there will 2003 some 150 NGOs be monitory journalist reports on HIV/AIDS. The network will be called: AIDS Media Watch. DESCRIPTION: The form of program is training: Firstly, this training about how journalists work or understand mass media through media survey. Secondly, this about how to pay a close attention to the media content. It is carryout using content analysis research (a technical research, which describes communication content objectively, systematically and quantitatively) (Krippendorff, 1980). And framing analysis methods is a method presenting reality where the truth of specific case is not denied totally, but twisted smoothly by giving focus on certain aspect using words of connotative meaning (Aditjondro, 1992). The training will be held for 4 days (32 hours) consisting of 16-hour discussion and 16 hour practice. RECOMMENDATIONS: The outcome of monitoring will be disseminated to society, so that they will be aware if the media writing and coverage are sensationally or exaggerated the fact. So it is expected that better and more responsible. The outcome will be sent to media, their ombudsman of related media and to the Press Council.
