Differences between Burkitt's and non-Burkitt's high grade lymphomas (HGL) associated with HIV infection.

Andrieu JM, Raphael M, Gentilini M, Tourani JM, Dupont B, Armengaud M; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1989 Jun 4-9; 5: 539 (abstract no. Th.C.O.39).

French HIV-associated tumors registry (HATR). Oncology/Hematology, Laennec hospital, 42 rue de Sevres -75340 Paris - Cedex 07 - France

From 1.87 to 9.88, 102 HGL were recorded in the HATR: Burkitt's lymphomas (BL) 39, non-Burkitt's lymphomas (NBL) 63 (immunoblastic 28, large cell or predominantly large cell 33, histocytic 2); route of HIV infection: Male homosex 61, IVDA 11, both 5, heterosex (Europe plus Africa) 11, others and not available 14. Initial characteristics of BL and NBL are given in the table. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. We conclude that there are significant differences between BL and NBL for clinical presentation (stage I-IV VS extra-nodal only) and BL occurs earlier than NBL in the course of HIV infection. Etiopathological implications of these differences will be discussed taking into account both B and T cell disorders of HIV disease.
