Description:
Abstract:
MTHYGAP is an ARC/INFO vector coverage representing the most spatially accurate 1:100,000 (100k) scale hydrography for Montana and vicinity. In compiling a digital database of 100k hydrography from US Geological Survey (USGS) digital line graphs (DLGs), we found many inconsistencies in spatial and attribute information. To ensure that we had the most current, accurate hydrographic information available for Montana, all 100k DLG quadrangles that fell totally or partially within the state boundary were compared to their corresponding 100k published topographic maps, which are considered by the USGS as the standard with which to evaluate DLG quality. In addition to quadrangles at least partly within the state, we included some quadrangles beyond Montana's borders to help avoid edge effects in subsequent analyses, in particular the prediction of vertebrate species distributions for Montana Gap Analysis (MT-GAP). Our intent was to make sure that hydrographic features in surrounding states were considered, especially when buffers were applied to assess distance to water for various vertebrate species.

A total of 129 100k quadrangles were: 1) acquired from the USGS ftp site as digital line graphs (publication dates ranging from 1972-1986); 2) converted to ARC/INFO coverages; and 3) checked against corresponding 100k published topographic maps (publication dates ranging from 1975-1994) to verify spatial and attribute code accuracy. Attributes were added (following USGS DLG attribute code standards) to reflect added, miscoded, and inconsistent (e.g., superfluous to the 100k scale) arcs in each quadrangle coverage; original spatial information was maintained. Quadrangles then were appended to form a statewide coverage, and 100k quadrangle boundary outlines were deleted. Due to further inconsistencies in arc attribute coding, selecting entire feature types was virtually impossible because miscoded parts of features, as well as miscoded small arc segments within larger features, were widespread throughout this coverage. Large rivers, for example, could not be selected in their entirety because several small arc fragments within larger river sections were miscoded. The USGS hydrography codes were therefore further corrected for continuity, and simplified for ease of use in Montana Gap Analysis and other lab projects.

The following metadata elements are required by GAP, but do not parse using the FGDC ms parser (although similar elements can be found later in this document for several of these). For the convenience of GAP users, these elements are listed here. Data Set Identity: MTHYGAP; Raster File Format: NA; Raster File Sensor: NA; Vector File Format: ARCE7; Nonspatial File Format: NA; Source Distance Resolution: Unknown; Raster File Number of Bytes per Pixel: NA; Native Data Structure: Vector.

Purpose:
This coverage was produced to create the most accurate representation of 100k hydrography for Montana, for use in riparian land cover classification, vertebrate distribution modeling for Montana Gap Analysis, and other lab projects.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
All 100k hydrography quadrangles that fell partially or totally within Montana boundaries were checked for spatial and attribute coding accuracy; a total of 6759 arcs were added and coded as such, 1805 arcs were miscoded and recoded correctly, 6050 arcs were flagged as superfluous to/inconsistent with the 100k scale hydrography, published map version.

EDIT DIGITAL DATA TO MATCH PUBLISHED MAPS. Edit 100k hydrography coverages by digitizing/recoding on screen in ARCEDIT. Add attributes in compliance with USGS DLG standards (MAJOR5 and MINOR5) to house code additions and changes where necessary. Use LATTICECONTOUR command to create contour line coverages for 100k quads from digital elevation models (USGS 7.5' DEMs wherever available, patched as necessary with three-arc second data from Defense Mapping Agency resampled to 30 m pixels and co-registered with satellite imagery by Hughes/STX Corp.). Use DEM contours along with spatially compatible Landsat TM satellite imagery (30 m pixels) as backdrops to guide onscreen digitizing using a mouse.

Three types of editing changes were made: 1) adding missing arcs; 2) flagging miscoded arcs; and 3) flagging superfluous arcs. Where arcs are present on the published map but not in digital data, add the missing arcs and code according to USGS DLG attribute coding standards, with additional code indicating arcs as new to the original coverage: MAJOR5 = 333. Where arcs are miscoded, select arcs in need of recoding and code MAJOR5 = 777. Usually, perennial stream arcs were miscoded as intermittent stream arcs and vice versa; in these instances, no further coding changes made. For miscodes other than perennial/intermittent problems, code the MINOR5 attribute with the correct, standard USGS hydrography code. Where arcs are superfluous to the 100k coverage (not on the published map), code as MAJOR5 = 888.

APPEND QUADS TO CREATE STATEWIDE COVERAGE. In ARC, append the 129 quadrangles together - append east and west halves of the state first, because APPEND command will not handle more than 100 coverages at a time. Append two halves together for complete coverage of Montana and vicinity. Remove quadrangle outlines in ARCEDIT (select MAJOR1 = -99999 and delete).

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
EVALUATE FEATURES AND CREATE SIMPLIFIED CODES. Select all USGS item codes: evaluate each arc type (e.g., stream vs. lake, etc.), evaluate coding continuity throughout arc types (e.g., small pieces of large river arcs may have been coded incorrectly with a shoreline code), then modify the MAJOR3 and MINOR3 items so that codes fall in the desired categories, including large/major rivers, streams (intermittent and perennial categories), lakes (intermittent and perennial categories), swamps/marshes/wetlands (see Entity_and_Attribute_Information). MAJOR3 and MINOR3 were selected for modification because their contents - sparse and often seemingly erroneous - were not useful for our purposes. No changes were made to original USGS items except MAJOR3 and MINOR3.

The resultant coverage, MTHYGAP, is the starting point for input layers used in vertebrate modeling for MT-GAP. For example, perennial streams (MAJOR3 = 412 and MINOR3 ne 610) were extracted from this coverage; lakes of various types were extracted and coded according to characteristics like size (hectares) and presence of islands (see documentation for MTLAKE coverage); and major rivers were extracted and coded as desired (see MTRIVER.TXT, documentation for the major rivers dataset made up of MTRIVERP and MTRIVERA coverages). These vector coverages were further manipulated to create intermediate/temporary grids for use in the raster-based modeling process.
