Keyword vs. Browse vs. Exact
NOAALINC can search three different ways for the term(s) you enter.
The search screen explains this options briefly. The explanation
below goes into greater detail for each of the options.
Keyword searches for the term contained anywhere in corresponding
field(s).
Example: a search on climate would retrieve (amongst others):
-A record with title: Journal of climate
-A record with publisher: Program for Climate Model Diagnosis
and Intercomparison
-A record with subject heading: [Place]-Climate.
-etc.
Browse searches the index for the closest match that
begins with the term(s) used.
Example: a search on climate would retrieve a list beginning
with:
1 CLIMATC EXERCISES
2 CLIMATE
3 CLIMATE A HANDBOOK FOR BUSINESS MEN STUDENTS AND TRAV
4 CLIMATE A TREATISE ON THE PRINCIPLES OF WEATHER AND CLIM
[etc.]
Exact searches for the term(s) exactly as shown, i.e.,
the field(s) searched must contain only the
term(s) shown and in exact order. For example, a search on climate
would retrieve the following records (amongst others):
-A record with a title of: Climate (with no other words in title)
-A record with subject heading of: Climate (with no subdivisions
or other words)
-A record with a series entry of: Climate (with no other words
or numbering).
