Photograph of Paul Fuss   Dr. Fuss joined NIST in 2000 as a National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral fellow. In this capacity he conducted research related to thermal radiation exchange with participating gaseous fuel species in heated environments. Prior to this he spent one year at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where the focus of his research was the interaction of submicron scale water mist in premixed laminar flames.

Dr. Fuss spent five years as a research engineer with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Fire Research Laboratory (FRL). In this capacity, he provided engineering analyses, technical assistance and fire scene support to ATF Special Agents, Certified Fire Investigators (CFI) and National Response Teams (NRT) in the areas of ignition and flamespread, material fire performance, fire growth and fire dynamics. He conducted fire tests and utilized computer fire models in support of fire investigations and research projects.

Dr. Fuss returned to NIST in 2007 as a Fire Protection Engineer in the Firefighting Technology Group. He is currently involved in the technical investigation of the furniture store fire in Charleston, SC. Other projects include soot measurements in underventilated full-scale compartment fires, development of portable fire extinguisher performance metrics and hose stream performance.

Dr. Fuss has published over 20 papers and reports. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and ASTM.
