I'm looking for a single digital file or image of the large scale geologic maps of Mars that is in a simple cylindrical projection. Now, I've found the Eastern, Western, and Polar digital files at the Astrogeological mapping web site, but the problem I'm having is trying to convert and mosaic the various projections into a single cylindrical file. While this is not impossible to do, I'd thought I'd ask around and see if this has already been done before I waste alot of my time.

Thanks

We do have them in a merged GIS format (vector) which we use for analysis but those don't make for a pretty figure (They are downloadable from PIGWAD). I do have a jpeg with geology on MOLA that tries to emulate the colors of the printed map (not the best though).

Vector:

Geology BW Raster (w/ look-up-table to map DN value to Unit Name) :
ftp://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/mars/geology/mars_globalgeo_dd_image.zip (1 meg)

Geology Raster w/ MOLA underneath:
ftp://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/mars/geology/mars_globalgeo_mola_raster.zip (2.3 megs)

They have also been released without merging in there original projection as PDF, Illustrator, and Tiff formats but w/o labels, grids or georef info.

Herb Fry generated a generalized version which can be downloaded from:

The 1:15M Geology Map as it stands in digital form is not the best. It will not fit to any modern MDIM (Latest MDIM2.1 or even the original MDIM1) or other digital image mosaic. Also the original digitized vector versions were lost and all I could get my hand on was the raster version. This is why the vector contacts are so jaggy. Cleaning this dataset would be welcome (hint, hint) but hard to justify. Ken Tanaka et.al. are currently work on a large-scale Mars North Plains map and there may be a possible redo of the whole planet. Because there are so many new datasets, a new global mapping effort is definitely needed. Although a redo would be years off as many mappers would be involved.

We are attempting to scan the paper copies. Once we have a good version I will also register them. Although, upon reprojection the labels will be squeezed or torn apart.

Trent
