I'm generating contours from the 128-bit MOLA jazz in ArcScene using 3D Analyst. Does the fact that the cell size in the MOLA data is 463m have any bearing on the accuracy of the generated contours?
i.e. I've generated contour intervals of 250m and 100m, and the latter better delineates the features I'm looking at. But I'm slightly concerned as to the fidelity of the smaller-interval contours — can I rely on them as much as any other interval set of contours? Indeed, is there an optimum interval?
Thanks!

ESRI products generate what is called engineering contours, meaning that they follow the pixels fairly precisely - corners and all. That means that they don’t always look very smooth but they are accurate and repeatable. You don’t want to crazy on the interval, but a 100 m interval is reasonable for smaller areas. They just might get a little jaggy and closely spaced but they will be as accurate as the data allows.
To help cleanup the files you can try to smooth them after they are created. And for we usually actually add a length field and then select and remove all the "speckle" contours by removing the lines with small lengths. These are usually just tiny closed values surrounding single pixels.
Also for the polar areas, the resolution can be as good as ~115 m/p. So higher density can be used for those areas.
