Get Answers to Library-Related Questions at the NIH Orientation Fair

New NIHers, come to the NIH Orientation Fair and see how your questions measure up on the "Question Seismometer." Librarians will give real answers to how the NIH Library can help you get the information and data you need. Look for the NIH Library booth in the Exhibit Area, Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center (Building 10), B-1 Level, on Wednesday, September 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Information Desk Survey Yields Positive Results

Thank you to those of you who filled out the Information Desk Survey during the month of July. The survey was distributed to individuals who visited the Information Desk and was available in the Library’s Reading Room. The survey was intended to help the Library staff gauge users’ satisfaction with the service that they received at all service points of the Library’s Information Desk.

During the three week survey period, 34 surveys were completed. Overall, the responses were very positive. When asked to rate the service they received, 97% of respondents rated the service as excellent (91%) or good (6%). Respondents were also asked to rate individual elements of the service including courteousness, the staff member’s ability to understand the question, wait time, satisfaction with answer, and accuracy of information. Ratings were based on a 1-10 scale with a rating of 10 indicating that the respondent strongly agreed that good service was provided. Levels of satisfaction were consistently high in all areas with over 88% of respondents rating at least four out of five service elements as 9 or higher.

The information that is acquired from user surveys is valuable in continually assessing and improving the quality of the Library’s collection and services. Our next survey will be distributed during the month of September and will focus on the quality of mediated search results. We look forward to hearing from you.

For more information about the Information Desk Survey, please contact Jennifer Vrettos at 301-496-1158 or via email at vrettosj@mail.nih.gov.

My NIH Library Record— What Is It? What Can It Do For You?

My NIH Library Record is a feature of the NIH Library’s online catalog that allows you to:

  • view items checked out to you, sort by due date, and renew any or all of your renewable checked out items
  • search the catalog and save your searches in a special file associated with My NIH Library Record
  • set up a preferred search and be notified via email when a new book in an area of interest to you arrives in the library
  • view and change the information stored in your circulation record, e.g. make changes to your building, room number, etc. by logging into NED or by contacting the circulation desk (FDA personnel only).

To access My NIH Library Record, go to the NIH Library website and click on the link to the Online Catalog located in the upper right hand corner of the web page or choose Library Catalog from the Frequently Used Links pull down menu. You will find the link to My NIH Library Record located in the middle of the online catalog page, on the right. Click on it. You will now be asked to enter your name and barcode number, minus the dashes (found on the bottom front of your id badge for NIH patrons and on the back for FDA users).

To help you learn more, two online tutorials are available on the Library's Training page. Under Library Catalog, look for “Renew Books Online” and “Preferred Searches.” Additional information on this, or any other topic, can be obtained by contacting the Library's Information Desk at 301-496-1080 or by consulting with a librarian via the AskUs Live! service link on the NIH Library website.

MD Consult Announces Content Changes for the Fall

New content is coming to MD Consult. Included are a comprehensive otolaryngology text, two primary care periodicals with topical disease coverage, a new psychiatry offering, and the new Ferri Clinical Advisor! The otolaryngology text, Cummings: Head and Neck Surgery, and the journal Clinical Cornerstone are already available. The other components will be added in September. They include Ferri: Ferri's Clinical Advisor 2004 with almost 500 signs and symptoms and 200 clinical algorithms to assist in diagnosis and to expedite patient workup and therapy. Also, on the way are Jacobson: Psychiatric Secret, a concise, yet complete clinical reference on psychiatry in 85 chapters and Disease-A-Month wherein each issue presents an in-depth review of a single topic.

MD Consult reports that they were forced to remove Pfenninger: Procedures for Primary Care Physicians and Tasman: Psychiatry because new editions have published and they were unable to license them.

ESI, Not JCR, Reviewed for Renewal—JCR Available to NIH

The NIH Library recently solicited users' input about Essential Science IndicatorsSM(ESI) and some of the comments we received indicated that people were confusing Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) with ESI. We wish to emphasize that we are not considering cancelling the JCR program.

Journal Citation Reports provides easy access to data that helps you to compare scholarly journals. It calculates the impact factor of a journal. The impact factor measures the frequency with which articles in a journal have been cited in a particular year. Essential Science Indicators, the product under consideration for cancellation, focuses on a small time frame and calculates how often a journal, author or country is the source of highly cited papers.

To access ESI or JCR, go to the NIH Library’s Databases page.
