BACKGROUND: Ongoing surveillance is necessary to detect changes in resistance patterns. METHODS: Isolates were collected between May 1999 and May 2000 from Europe and the USA. A total of 293 Bacteroides fragilis (BF), 303 Prevotella spp.(PRS), 92 Finegoldia [Peptostreptococcus] anaerobius (PA), 98 P. magnus (PMA), 146 P. micros (PMI), 157 Fusobacterium nucleatum (FN), 83 Eikinella corrodens (EC) and 125 Porphyromonas spp. (POS) isolates were tested by agar dilution (NCCLS guidelines). A/C at a fixed clavulanic acidconcent ration of 2 microg/ml (A/C 2), A/C at a 2:1 concentration ratio (A/C 2:1), amoxicillin (AM), clindamycin (CL), imipenem (IM), levofloxacin (LE) and metronidazole (ME) were tested. RESULTS: MIC50/90s (microg/ml) are given below. [table: see text] CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that A/C remains an effective agent for the treatment andprophy laxis of anaerobic infections. ME was very active against all species except EC. IM was also highly active against all species. LE, CL and AM were the least active agents. LE was least active against PMA, BF and PRS. CL was least active against EC, BF and PMA.
