Till honored by American Nuclear Society

Charles E. Till, associate laboratory director for engineering research, has won the American Nuclear Society's Walker Cisler Medal.

The Walker Cisler award is the society's top award for outstanding scientific or engineering research achievements or management associated with the design and development of fast reactors for electric power generation. The medal will be presented at the society's annual meeting June 27 in Philadelphia.

Till has led reactor development research at Argonne for the past 15 years. Under his direction, an inherently safe reactor design -- the Integral Fast Reactor -- was proved and demonstrated. He also led Argonne in major advances in nuclear reactor efficiency and in developing new technologies to reduce nuclear reactor waste and lessen problems of nuclear material proliferation.

Idaho Senator Dirk Kempthorne congratulated Till by letter.

"Your work on the Integral Fast Reactor Program," Kempthorne said, "demonstrates that nuclear energy must play a central role in this nation's future energy strategy. I am confident that your continuing work ... will address seminal issues regarding the ultimate disposition of spent nuclear fuel."

"With the present emphasis on disarmament and non-proliferation, recognition of Dr. Till's achievements is especially timely," said Argonne Director Alan Schriesheim.

Under President Jimmy Carter, Till served as technical director for the U.S. delegation on fast reactors, international nuclear fuel-cycle evaluation -- the group responsible for U.S. negotiations on international nuclear non-proliferation. Till also did extensive work on disarmament and non-proliferation with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency of the Department of State, and DOE's Office of International Affairs.

    Argonne Week to expand

Starting with next week's issue, Argonne Week -- the paper version -- is going to get a lot bigger.

A huge increase in the amount of material for Argonne Week, combined with advances in desktop-publishing technology and recent cost-cutting efforts, led to the decision to combine Argonne Week and Argonne News.

Argonne Week will expand to a larger, four-page format. Once a month, a digest of the stories in that month's issues, plus selected departments and features, will be mailed to retirees and other off-site readers.

Off-site readers will receive laboratory news twice as often. Many items that have been delayed or cut for lack of space will finally find room. The change will save on printing and mailing costs. Last but not least, the classified ads will run at a reasonable type size.

The expanded publication will be available on Argonne's World Wide Web site (http://www.anl.gov) and on the Macintosh public volume and PCPUBLIC, all of which will be updated by Friday morning.

Readers should call, write or E-mail if problems arise -- or as always, if they have a story suggestion or news tip.

    Deadlines to change

The larger version of Argonne Week will be printed off-site and will require more time to prepare. Starting with the June 26 issue, deadlines for all news items, classified ads and seminars will be 5 p.m. Monday for the issue dated the following Monday.

For example, all items for the Monday, June 26 issue must be received at the Argonne Week office no later than 5 p.m. Monday, June 19.

    Lab holds keys to success

    for Bethel New Life interns

Associate Laboratory Director Harvey Drucker presented a set of keys for one of the laboratory's Alternative Fuel Vehicles to office interns participating in a collaborative program between the laboratory and Bethel New Life, Inc. (Photo, 88K bytes) Angel O'Neal, Felisha Jones and Judy Burnett will use the car to drive to and from the laboratory for the next three months. The women will learn general office procedures and word processing skills as part of the Document Processing and Control Center, developing extensive portfolios to present to potential employers.

Nobel winner Lee to speak on `Symmetries'

Nobel Prize Laureate Tsung-Dao Lee will present a colloquium on "Symmetries and Asymmetries" during an upcoming International workshop hosted by Argonne's High Energy Physics Division.

The colloquium will begin at 2 p.m.Thursday, June 22, in the Building 362 auditorium. Lee will discuss symmetries in nature and human artifacts and analyze the foundations of symmetry principles in physics. All employees whose work schedules permit are invited to attend.

Lee shared the 1957 Nobel Prize with China's Chen Ning Yang for discovering violations of the principle of conservation of parity.

The International Workshop on the Tau/Charm Factory will be held June 21-23 in Building 362. Workshop participants will review potential designs for the facility -- a high-current electron-positron collider -- now under consideration.

For more information, call José Repond at ext. 2-5782.

Volunteers will receive `tanks' for their efforts

Argonne Club needs a few employees to take a series of short swims on a hot summer day -- call Fred Onesto (APO) at ext. 2-5260 and volunteer for the dunk tank at the annual Argonne Picnic on Saturday, July 8.

Other volunteers are needed to assist with games, selling tickets, greeting picnickers and helping on the hayride.at this year's Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. Events will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the picnic ends at 4 p.m.

    Runners needed for Chicago Classic

Argonne is forming a corporate team to run in the 19th annual Chicago Distance Classic on Sunday July 9th.

    Events include 20-kilometer and five-kilometer runs, beginning at 7:45 a.m., and a five-mile fitness walk at 8 a.m.

The team is open to all Argonne and DOE employees, including summer students. Cost is $16. Entry forms are available from Rich Lee (ET), Mark Nutt (DEP), Aziz Uras (RE) or Walter McFall (HR).

Runners who get pledges for the American Lung Association, which sponsors the classic, will receive awards. A post-race party is planned.
