Dolphin, Arrow, Eagle and Antinous (Delphinus, Sagitta, Aquila, and Antinous), 1825

In October, 130 AD, Antinous, the young protege of Emperor Hadrian, drowned mysteriously in the Nile. The Emperor declared the lad a god, founded a city to commemorate him (Antinopolis) and ordered that he have a place in the stars.

The constellation Antinous is located below Aquila the Eagle and Delphinus the Dolphin. In Roman mythology, the Eagle had carried the youth Ganymede to Zeus. In Greek mythology, the dolphin had rescued Arion, a favorite of Apollo who placed the dolphin among the stars. The Arrow, Sagitta, was shot by Hercules when he hunted Aquila and Cygnus, the Swan.
