REDOUBT LAKE CABIN (AK), TONGASS NF - FS, AK

A-frame cabin is equipped with sleeping loft, wooden bunks, tables, benches, woodstove for heat, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. A skiff with oars provided is provided for cabin users only; bring personal flotation devices; a 2-10 HP longshaft outboard motor enhances use of the skiff. Brown bear frequent the area; pack out all garbage; firewood can be scarce; cabin is not maintained in the winter.
A difficult access by a very small, light skiff is also possible at the west end of the lake from Redoubt Bay (at the base of the falls) across 100- ft.(30 meter) portage. However, please note that due to the length Redoubt Lake (approx. 10miles/15km), it can become very windy.

SETTING: Scenic beauty of spruce and hemlock forested mountains rising near 3500 feet to snowfields and dramatic granite cirques.

ACTIVITIES: Rainbow, cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden fishing. Sockeye salmon mid-July to mid-August, coho salmon Aug.-Sept. Hiking the Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake. There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made on the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance.
  • Boil or treat stream water before drinking.
  • All garbage and food must be packed out.
Occasionally poor weather can cause delayed arrivals or extended stays; cabin users should be prepared for this. December through March, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Contact the local Forest Service Ranger District office for current information prior to making reservations during these periods.

Getting There:

Tongass/Sitka AK

Accessible April through November. Located 10 air miles south of Sitka, on south central Baranof Island. Access by floatplane is 15 minutes. Shallow sandbar near cabin can be difficult for planes to maneuver across.

Access by boat is recommended only in summer. Go to the head of Silver Bay, then hike 6 miles on the very difficult Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail. Check trail conditions before going.
