MARTEN LAKE CABIN (AK), TONGASS NF - FS, AK

Description: Built in 1965, this 12'x 14' Pan-Abode cabin sleeps 4 people with 2 single and 2 double bunks. There is also a table and benches, woodstove for heat, woodshed (wood provided), splitting maul, skiff with oars, and an outhouse. There is a partially covered front porch with a wooden cooler box for food storage. Cabin users should bring personal flotation devices for skiff use, and secure the skiff before leaving the cabin.
The cabin has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. The cabin has no phone access.

Proximity: The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock with some cedar. The immediate area around the cabin near the lake is a relatively flat valley bottom. Steep mountains rise from the edge of the area. There is a sand beach in front of the cabin at low and moderate lake levels. There are scenic views of Marten Lake and adjacent mountains from the cabin.

Fish: Cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden in Marten Lake and nearby Clay Lake.

Wildlife: Brown and black bear, moose, and mountain goat on surrounding ridges.


Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat drinking water prior to consumption. Pack out all garbage. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. In fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Please contact the local Forest Service Ranger District office for information prior to making reservations during these periods. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, wood stove for heat, bear-proof storage locker for food, skiff with oars & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, personal flotation devices, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals.

The cabin is located at the north end of Marten Lake, southeast of Wrangell. The lake is on the mainland (178' elevation) above Blake Channel and the Bradfield Canal. This cabin is accessible by floatplane only and is 25 miles by air from Wrangell. Marten Lake is usually ice-free May to October. Please check on local conditions before you go.
