Nuclear Radiation Sensors

Subsurface Radionuclide Measurements (160)

Backhoe

Problem: Rapid, low-cost subsurface measurement of various radionuclides is needed for environmental characterization

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry system suitable for down-well deployment
  • Demonstrated and deployed detector system at Hanford Site for site characterization requirements
  • Supported deployment with data analysis and interpretation

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Radiation detector development; gamma-ray measurements of subsurface contaminants; calibration facilities for subsurface radiation detectors; transuranic (TRU) content based on neutron measurements; analog and digital electronics; system integration; system test and evaluation; technology transfer to CRADA partner.
