Overview

Azerbaijan is an important U.S. ally due to its strategic geopolitical location, its role as a transport corridor between East and West, and its expanding importance as a source of oil and gas. Despite the country’s growing oil wealth, a significant percentage of its people still live below the poverty line. Used responsibly, Azerbaijan’s energy revenues can reduce poverty and improve the lives of all its citizens in a meaningful way.

The U.S. has a deep and abiding interest to help Azerbaijan make the best use of its energy resources and to strengthen its secular democracy in a predominantly Muslim nation. Since 1992, USAID has provided over $284 million of development and humanitarian assistance. On behalf of the American people, the current USAID portfolio focuses on programs that promote and support just governance and democracy; economic growth and prosperity; and improved health care, especially for mothers and children.
