OBJECTIVES: To assess changes in the sexual behavior among female partners (FP) of HIV infected men (IC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: ICs were recruited from seven participant centers from Rio de Janeiro from Aug 1990 thru Dec 1992. Couples were interviewed for risk factors and had blood collected for exams. Sexual practices before and after knowledge of HIV serostatus of the IC were assessed using McNemar's test. The Odds Ratio conditional on the number of discordant pairs was also estimated. RESULTS: Behavior change among FPs after learning the ICs HIV positivity TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Percent of Yes for practice. Percent of Always/Sometimes. CONCLUSIONS: 1. There was a statistically significant decrease in all sexual practices after learning the ICs serostatus; 2. The rate of condom use (always/sometimes) increased for all practices although only condom use during vaginal sex showed a statistically significant difference; 3. Despite the increase in condom use, unprotected sex is still practiced after learning the ICs serostatus; 4. Post-test counseling should be emphasized as prevention strategy.
