Sandal

Photograph of SandalWoven from yucca fiber during the Late Basketmaker or Early Pueblo period (AD 600 to 900).

In general, sandals were more finely constructed during this early period than in later centuries. Some sandals of this time carried colorful geometric designs on the sole. Others were made waterproof with pine pitch.

The Ancestral Puebloans of the Four Corners apparently wore sandals all year; moccasins are rarely found. Loops along the edge allowed the wearer to lace it tightly to his or her foot during the winter months, and to snugly hold in place socks or leggings of fur or fabric.
