Abstract

Divers Alert Network (DAN),a 501©(3) non-profit organization which began in l980 with a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, grew out of a need for treatment of acute diving accident patients. Through the 24-hour emergency hotline, DAN's medical staff can inform divers of the nearest appropriate treatment facilities or physician for diving injuries. Associated with Duke University Medical Center, DAN is supported by a membership association--the largest association of divers in the world. DAN also conducts recreational diving research, and provides various training courses and funding for recompression chambers worldwide. DAN also sells emergency oxygen and other safety equipment for treatment of diving injuries.

Publications

DAN's publications include the Dive and Travel Medical Guidel, DAN's Emergency Handbook, Scuba Diving in Safety and Health, Annual Recreational Diving Accident Statistics and other educational brochures and posters. Serial publication: Alert Diver (magazine), bimonthly--news and features on diving safety and diving medicine.
