December 2002: Typhoon "Ponsana" Hits Guam at 150 mph

Among several deaths, one related to the typhoon was due to the inability of emergency crews to get to a woman's home, close to the hospital according to Oyaol Ngirairikl and Scott Radway of the Pacific Daily News, while family performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation in vain. Classified as a Super Typhoon, Ponsana stopped Guam's airports, roadways, utilities, and schools, leaving many homeless in its wake. More information

November 2002: Denali is Strongest Quake in World of 2002

According to Doug O'Harra of the Anchorage Daily News, the 7.9 quake lasted about 90 seconds and damaged $20 million worth of roads and homes. The USGS reported over 6,000 aftershocks that continued through February, 2003.

September 2002: More Than 200 Killed by Typhoon Rusa in South Korea

The most powerful to hit South Korea since 1959, Rusa flooded some cities in 3 feet of rain, paralyzed communication and transportation, and wrought $750 million in damage according to initial reports. Gangneung, a city of over 220,000, was hardest hit; availability of drinking water was a special concern according to CBS News. More information

January 2002: Volcanos a threat to almost 1/4 world population

75 killed in Goma as hundreds of thousands of Africans fled lava from the errupting Mount Nyiragongo and flooded the streets of Goma. More than one billion live in volcanic hazard zones. This estimate rises as globalization occurs. More information
