"CORRECTIONS TO HISTORIC TORNADO DATABASE" ADDENDUM - Doug Speheger

This document is an addendum to NOAA Technical Memorandum NWS SR-209 (Doug Speheger, Corrections to the Historic Tornado Database, on-line version at http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/~speg/papers/tornamd)

For this addendum, the tornadoes listed are those in which an inconsistency was noted by the author between the database and Storm Data. The main comparison that was made is the list of counties for each tornado, but occasionally other differences were noted. Unlike the Oklahoma and north Texas tornadoes listed in the Technical Memorandum, a geographic check to make sure that the path and counties agreed was not done if the counties listed were consistent between Storm Data and the database. Other entries in this addendum are made when the author was made aware of other differences. For example, entries are included in this list for inconsistent geography noted by representatives of other NWS offices (including Corpus Christi TX, and North Webster IN) when investigating the tornadoes within their area of responsibility. Other NWS representatives finding any differences are encouraged to e-mail the author for inclusion on this list to make other users aware of your findings. (Proper credit will be included).

As stated in Section 2 of the Technical Memorandum, according to Dr. Joseph Schaefer (2000, personal communication) on the history of the historic tornado database: "one cannot a priori assume that the SPC/NSSFC data is wrong and that Storm Data is right!" Furthermore, the resources to investigate these tornadoes were not as abundant as the author had when investigating Oklahoma tornadoes in the original Technical Memorandum, nor does the author have the resources that were available to the original creators of the database. Therefore, the database was given an even greater "benefit of the doubt" than in the original Technical Memorandum that dealt with Oklahoma and the NWS Norman County Warning Area (CWA). An entry is only listed in Section A of this addendum ("database likely incorrect") when the latitude and longitude path listed in the database itself confirmed the path listed in Storm Data and verified the county or counties listed in Storm Data and therefore inconsistent with the county or counties listed in the database. In other cases, the differences are listed in section B to make the user aware that there is an inconsistency between Storm Data and the database. In a number of cases, the database makes what are believed to be correct changes to what had been listed in Storm Data, and these changes are listed in section C.

Storm Data entries, especially historic ones, are occasionally confusing and not always easily correlated with specific database entries. Although every effort has been made to make the entries on this page accurate, confusion from Storm Data entries or the author's unfamiliarity with local geography may introduce sources of error in this list. Users are urged to use this addendum only as a guide.

In the listings below, green indicated the county (counties) that are likely correct. Red indicated the county (counties) that are likely incorrect. Entries in blue indicate it is not known which entry is likely correct.

The lists below also include non-Oklahoma tornadoes listed in the Technical Memorandum. However, a reading of the technical memorandum is encouraged to become familiar with sources of error.

States: Texas, Indiana, Kansas, other

Texas

A. Database likely incorrect
SPC Tornado Number Date County/counties listed Affected WFO
TX 59- 29 5/10/1959. DB: Burleson/ Milam SD: BURLESON HOU, FTW
near Chriesman... Hix and Blackjack. All of these communities are in Burleson Co. Database lat/lon also confines path to within Burleson Co.
TX 59- 43 5/25/1959. DB: Webb SD: WHEELER CRP, AMA
near Shamrock and Heald community. Likely coding error as Shamrock is in Wheeler Co. Database lat/lon does place event too far west and in Gray Co however.
TX 61- 64 6/ 3/1961. DB: Oldham/ Rains SD: OLDHAM/ RANDALL FTW, AMA
W of Vega - SE of Wildorado; near Hollywood Road and Canyon Expressway. Apparently a discontinuous path. Also apparently a coding error as Oldham and Rains are not adjacent counties. Database lat/lon places endpoint near Canyon in Randall County.
TX 63- 21 5/29/1963. DB: Bailey/ Hockley SD: Terry Likely: TERRY/ HOCKLEY LBB
Near Needmore - near Ropesville. There are towns called Needmore in both Terry and Bailey Counties. Path listed suggests that Terry County is probably the correct Needmore in this case. Ropesville is in Hockley Co.
TX 63- 22 5/27/1963. DB: Howard SD: LAMAR MAF, FTW
7 W Paris. Likely coding error This is in Lamar County and database lat/lon confirms.
TX 63- 62 7/25/1963. DB/SD: Kleberg likely: JIM WELLS CRP
20 SW Kingsville. Although database and Storm Data lists as Kleberg Co. and Kingsville is in Kleberg Co., the location at 20 SW would be in Jim Wells Co. This difference was noted by NWS/CRP.
TX 67- 28 4/20/1967. DB:Ochiltree SD: PARKER AMA, FTW
Likely coding error. Storm Data and database lat/lon place event near Springtown in Parker County.
TX 67- 33 5/ 1/1967. DB:Wood SD: TITUS SHV
Storm Data and database lat/lon show tornado west of Mt. Pleasant in Titus County.
TX 67- 65 6/ 1/1967. DB:Lubbock/ Hockley. SD: LUBBOCK LBB
Storm Data and database lat/lon show event near the city of Lubbock. Storm Data entry includes Hockley Co. in the "Tornado, wind, hail, rainstorm and flash flooding" entry, although the tornado is described only at the outskirts of the city of Lubbock in Lubbock Co. Database lat/lon also does not extend path into Hockley Co.
TX 68- 95 8/14/1968. DB:Lubbock SD: ROBERTS LBB, AMA
Likely coding error. Storm Data and database lat/lon place event 5 NW Miami in Roberts County.
TX 69- 18 4/27/1969. DB:Harris SD: RUSK HOU, SHV
Likely coding error. Storm Data and database lat/lon place event near Lake Striker or 20 SW Henderson, which places event in Rusk County.
TX 70- 77 8/ 4/1970. DB:Galveston SD: BRAZORIA HOU
Likely coding error. Storm data and database lat/lon place event in Alvin which is in Brazoria County.
TX 71-115 7/ 6/1971. DB:Baylor SD: BOWIE OKC, SHV
Near Red Springs. Wrong Red Springs used in the database. There is a Red Springs in Baylor County, however Storm Data text specifically references a Red Springs that is 8 miles east of Texarkana and in Bowie County. Reference Tech. Memo.
TX 71-169 12/14/1971. DB:Tarrant SD: CORYELL FTW
Database lists a tornado on 12/12/71 1710 CST 0.1 mi 17 yds with 2 inj in Tarrant Co which was not found in Storm Data. A tornado listed in Storm Data NW of Copperas Cove in Coryell Co. was not in the database. The database lat/lon associated with this record indicates that this should have been the Copperas Cove entry. So details were changed to match Storm Data entry.
TX 71-170 12/14/1971. TARRANT FTW
Database lists this event near Mansfield as 12/12/1971 while Storm Data lists as 12/14/1971. There was a outbreak of tornadoes in the metroplex on 12/14/1971 so this is presumed to be the correct day. There is a lot of disagreement in specific details of the tornadoes in Storm Data and the database for the tornadoes on this day in path length/width and injuries.
TX 72- 48 5/10/1972. DB:Rockwell SD: RUNNELS FTW, SJT
Likely coding error. Storm data and database lat/lon place event near Winters in Runnels Co.

Storm Data lists a 59 mile path with the only specific location in Texas entry 5 SE Sunray. The Oklahoma entry lists the Bryans Corner area in Beaver Co., again with no specific track information. The Beaver Co. Oklahoma entry infers the Ochiltree is appropriately added. Geography would also suggest the tornado would have clipped extreme southeastern Sherman Co. This is likely one of the worst officially documented violent tornadoes in recent history. However, Grazulis lists the path as from SE of Sunray to just outside of Gruver and then into Oklahoma which would make the counties Moore/ Sherman/ Hansford TX/ Texas OK/ Beaver OK.

Storm Data lists event as Sherman County and 5 N Brewster which would likely be Thomas County although close to county line. Database lists event as Thomas County although database lat/lon place event NW of Brewster and in Sherman County.
KS 91- 5/ 91- 6 3/26/1991 Pratt and Reno Counties DDC, ICT
2.5 NW Preston - 9 N Abbeyville. Perhaps tornado #91-6 is a continuation of #91-5?
KS 93- 52 5/17/1993 DB: Kingman ICT
There is only one Storm Data entry, although the text says "two brief, weak tornadoes"
KS 94- 31 7/ 1/1994 SD/DB: GOVE GLD
Storm Data lists this tornado as 7/15/1994.
KS unlisted 5/22/1995 SD: Pratt DDC
Storm data lists a tornado at 1453 CST 7 W Pratt that is not included in the database.
KS 95-50/95-51 5/22/1995 Harvey and Sedgwick Counties ICT

KS 59-15 5/ 4/1959 DB: WASHINGTON/ CLAY SD: Washington TOP
6 E - 9 E Clifton. Storm Data lists end point as 9 E 0.5 N of Clifton... so inclusion of Clay appears to be correct.
KS 59- 40 5/29/1959 DB: ROOKS SD: Ellis GRI, DDC
25 N Hays. Although Hays is in Ellis County, 25 N would place event in Rooks County.
KS 59- 66 12/26/1959 DB: NEOSHO SD: Lafette [sic] (probably Labette) ICT
7 NE Parsons. Although Parsons is in Labette County, 7 NE would place event in Neosho County.
KS 62- 50 7/ 6/1962 DB: GREENWOOD SD: Chase ICT
10 SE Matfield Green. Although Matfield Green is in Chase County, 10 SE would place event in Greenwood County.
KS 64- 60 5/26/1964 DB: COFFEY SD: Neosho TOP, ICT
4 NNE Burlington - John Redmond Reservoir. Storm Data lists this as Neosho County, but Coffey County would be correct.
KS 67- 16 6/11/1967 DB: BARBER/ HARPER SD: Harper/ Kingman DDC, ICT
10 W Hazleton - 5 W Attica - 5.5 SSE Rago. Storm Data lists as Harper/ Kingman although the database would be correct. The end point is close to Harper-Kingman County line although as described likely remains within Harper County.
KS 76- 4 4/14/1976 DB: Seward/ Meade/ Gray/ Hodgeman SD: SEWARD/ MEADE/ GRAY/ FORD/ HODGEMAN DDC
5 SW Plains - Plains - 1 NE Jetmore (not continuous). This path should include Ford County as listed in the database. However, Storm Data lists the path as non-continuous and thus may have "skipped" Ford County.
KS 82- 38 5/28/1982 DB: PRATT/ KINGMAN SD: Pratt DDC, ICT
6 SSE Pratt - 2 S Cunningham. Storm Data does not include Kingman County although end point of 2 S Cunningham indicated that the addition of Kingman County is likely correct.
KS 90- 78 6/16/1990 DB: SMITH SD: Phillips GRI
3 E Athol. Location as given in Storm Data would be in Smith County.

IL 82- 18 5/29/1982 DB: Montgomery/ Perry SD: Perry Likely: RANDOLPH/ PERRY STL, PAH
N of Percy - Conant. These are not adjacent counties, and Montgomery County is incorrect. Although Storm Data only lists Perry County, a beginning point north of Percy suggests that Randolph County may need to be added, and database lat/lon agrees.
