Georgia Power, a subsidiary of the Southern Company, filed plans with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to offer its 1.9 million electricity customers a green energy option. The program would enable customers to purchase 100-kilowatt-hour (kWh) blocks of renewable energy from sources such as landfill gas, wind and solar for an extra $6 each month, or 6¢/kWh, plus tax. An average residential customer uses about 1,000 kWh per month at a cost of $75. If approved by the PSC, the utility hopes to begin signing up customers for the program this summer. The renewable energy sources are expected to be available from nine to twelve months after the program launch.
