Background: Considering the statistics of the M.O.M there are living 5963 HIV infected children in Romania which represents about 52% of the total HIV infected children of Europe. Only 30% of them receive antiretroviral treatment (ARV), but only 60% receive protease inhibitors (PI) in the combination. Objective: To evaluate the incidence and gravity of one of the side effects of ARV treatment. Results and Conclusions: In the Day Clinic of the "Matei Bals" Institute of Infectious Diseases - Bucharest we care 670 HIV infected children. 323 of them receive ARV treatment.Clinical aspects of Lipodystrophy were registered in 9 children who are receiving 2INRT + 1 PI for more then 18 month: 5 of 83 (6%) - IDV;2 of 32 (6%) - RTV;2 of 62 (3%) - NFV. After more than 12 month of treatment we observed a redistribution of the fat of the body. The face is the most suggestive and impressive for lipodystrophy in children. The lab tests showed elevate levels of the cholesterol, triglicerides, lipids, and alkaline phosphatase. We did not discovered yet ECG abnormalities linked to lipodystrophy. We also observed clinical signs of lipodystrophy in children who received 2 INRT (ZDV+3TC; ZDV+ddC) for more than 2 years. We dont have yet an experience in using d4T+ddI = NVP in children. Lipodystrophy in old children seems to be very similar to adults.
