U.S. Embassy Khartoum issued the following Warden Message on January 11:

On January 5, the U.N Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) announced the withdrawal of non-essential staff from some areas of West Darfur, including El Geneina, as the result of a steady decline of security and access in the area during the last four months of 2005.  Americans residing in El Geneina are urged to follow the United Nations instructions regarding international staff remaining in West Darfur, monitor the local and international media, and to direct consular queries to the U.S. Embassy's Consular Section at telephone 0183-774-701/2/3 or by e-mail to consularsudan@state.gov.   American citizens with emergency situations can call the Embassy at any time.  After duty hours, a special telephone line (774-705) is monitored for emergencies. The U.S. Embassy reminds you to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase your security awareness.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet site at http://travel.state.gov,  where the current Worldwide Cautions, Public Announcements and Travel Warnings can be found.  Americans in Sudan who have not registered their presence with the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum are urged to register via the Internet through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov,  or by e-mail to the Embassy at consularsudan@state.gov
