Annotation: SURVEY OF INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES REGARDING COMMUNICATION OF INMATES WITH OUTSIDERS THROUGH CORRESPONDENCE, VISITATION, AND TELEPHONING.
Abstract: CONSIDERATION OF RECENT CHANGES IN COMMUNICATION POLICIES AND CHANGES ANTICIPATED FOR THE FUTURE WERE SECONDARY PURPOSES OF THE SURVEY. DATA FOR THE STUDY WERE OBTAINED FROM QUESTIONNAIRES GATHERED FROM 48 STATES. RESTRICTIONS IN THE AREA OF COMMUNICATIONS OF INMATES WITH OUTSIDERS EXIST TODAY, BUT THE POLICIES ARE LOOSENING UP ACCORDING TO THE DATA ANALYZED. ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES ARE TENDING TO BECOME MORE LIBERAL REGARDING VISITATION RULES. VISITATION FACILITIES ARE IMPROVING. CORRESPONDENCE POLICIES ARE CHANGING IN THE DIRECTION OF LIBERALITY FOR THE INMATE. POLICIES REGARDING TELEPHONE USAGE REMAIN RATHER STRICT WITH LITTLE USE OF TELEPHONES BEING ALLOWED IN MOST INSTITUTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
