SPECIALTIES:

Geologic mapping, southwestern Washington geology and mineral resources, petrologic and structural evolution of the Cascade volcanic arc in space and time.

CURRENT WORK:

Russell's current work includes

  • Geologic mapping in the northern Portland Basin, SW Washington to provide a basic understanding of the regional geology for hazards assessments: Deer Island, Woodland, Ariel, Amboy, Saint Helens, Ridgefield, Yacolt, Lacamas Creek, Camas 7.5-minute quadrangles

  • Geologic mapping along the I-5 corridor between the Portland and Chehalis Basins for Lifelines studies: Winlock, Toledo, Silver Lake, Castle Rock, Kelso, Rainier 7.5-minute quadrangles

  • Geochemical and paleomagnetic correlations (with Jon Hagstrum) of Columbia River Basalt flows in the northern Portland Basin

  • Petrologic, geochronologic, and paleomagnetic studies (with Jon Hagstrum, Bob Fleck, Bill Leeman (Rice University), and Rick Conrey (Washington State University) of Quaternary lavas of SW Washington and NW Oregon, focusing on neotectonic implications of cross-arc and along-arc chemical and age variations

  • Investigation of Quaternary deposits in the Lewis River valley (with Andrei Sarna-Wojcicki and Mike Clynne) to unravel its late Pleistocene glacial history and the early development of Mount St. Helens volcano
