We are going to put a down-hole video camera system in our budjet. Do you have any suggested venders and estimated prices. We need to be able to access nx size holes and maximum depth is around 100'. Any suggestions about some of the new smart hole systems using acoustic logging.

The Office of Surface Mining out of their Pittsburgh Tech Center used to have downhole videography capability. Ask for Dan Paholic or Roland Maits (if they are still there. This dates me, but I used their services on projects in Ohio and Indiana before the States were granted primacy for their AML programs.

Quality Environmental Professionals, Inc. (QEPI) out of Indianapolis performed a project for me a couple of months ago and performed some pretty impressive downhole work on some deep monitoring wells. I'm not sure if they sub'd this work out, but it was obtained on short notice and at reasonable fees. Ask for Deb Peters if you call. 317-351-4255

Also, unless you plan on using it on more than eight or ten jobs before it becomes obsolete or broken, it may not justify capitalizing and training expenses for a neat toy on a shelf. Your call..... If you get you holes prepared in advance, a lot can be videotaped in one day. Count on about $1200 per 10 hour day to lease the equipment and operator. This would probably include 7 hours of travel and three hours on site. Good Luck John H. Gasper, MSEM,PE - EnviRESTORE Engineering, LLP 317-845-9041

I work for the North Dakota Abandoned Mine Lands Program. We have an old Westinghouse borehole video camera, purchased in 1983. It has worked pretty well and we're still using it, but is beginning to wear out and we're thinking about upgrading.

Some features that are important to us include, portability/durability, easy one person operation, side viewing capability with compass directional indicator and distance indicator, low light camera capability, underwater capability, high intensity adjustable light (possibly LED), automatic cable reel, ability to be used with a laptop and capture video on DVD, powered by battery, generator, or vehicle cigarette lighter.

We've only begun gathering information, mostly via internet, so I'm reluctant to mention any specific products. Most of the products I've seen seem to be oriented toward drillhole or sewer inspections rather than underground mine applications. I believe the OSM Pittsburgh Tech Center's contact for borehole video work is Bill Ehler.

If anyone has specific recommendations/prices on borehole cameras for underground mine applications, please post them.
