Took fourth archaeomagnetic sample from Mound
A, while continuing top excavate on top and south slope. |
|
Hearth basin after removal of fill above fired
surface in N41E180-181. Designated Feature 59, this is one of several
hearths that have been found associated with fired surfaces atop the mound. |
|
Location of the first six of twelve
archaeomagnetic sample cubes taken from a fired surface atop mound A, on S2
(a second red fired surface) located near the center of the mound. Twelve
samples are taken from each location. Note the level to the right. Each
sample must be taken level, with the declination carefully recorded. |
|
Hearth basin (later designated Feature 75),
before careful cleaning and exposure. "Quick and dirty" field sots like this
are sometimes taken on unusual features as they are detected (typically if
they are found near the end of the day), to ensure a record of them is
present. See July 29th for a later photograph. |

SEAC archaeologists Jessica McNeil and Heather
Mustonen cutting out sample fired clay areas, small pedestals of fired clay
some 2-3 cm high and ca. 1.5 cm in diameter. These are then encased in
plaster to form a cube and then removed, after locational information and
declination are carefully recorded. |

SEAC archaeologist Jessica McNeil scrapping off
excess plaster from the archaeomagnetic sample cubes after removal from the
ground, and prior to pouring plaster on the back to make them complete
plastered cubes. In the background Heather Mustonen is doing the same thing,
while checking the scribing of sample information on the cube.. |
