OBJECTIVE: To prevent HIV transmission through transfusion by three years, 1998-2000. METHOD: A total of 3855 of blood doners were screened for HIV before transfusing blood to patients in three main hospitals in Pemba, Mkoani, Chake and Wete Hospitals. The capillus method was used for screening of HIV without confirmatory test. RESULTS: Among 3855 blood donors screened for HIV 26 blood donors were found HIV sere-positive. The prevalence of HIV in blood donors is 0,6%. The trend is shown in table. [Image not included] CONCLUSION: The study shows that there is low HIV prevalence in Pemba Islands but still HIV screening in blood donors should be emphasized before transfusing blood to patients.
