AP: Research personnel in the departments of Agronomy, Entomology and Plant Pathology will combine research efforts & focus on development of biological agents for pest control, use of these agents in integrated pest management systems and assessment of the impact of expanded use of biological control agents on the pesticide load in the environment. The primary focus will be on biological controls and their incorporation into operational pest management systems. Cotton, soybean and rice pest management systems will serve as the models. PR: 9501 TO 9512 A number of rice assessions with significant allelopathic activity were identified as were several turf-type tall fescue cultivars. A number of biological control agents showed significant potential for control of numerous pest species e.g. ARF-18 fungus for soybean cyst nematode, Neozygites fresenii for cotton aphid, Beaveria bassianna for tarnished plant bug, Trichoderma spp. for rice sheath blight, several bacterial isolates for Phythium root rot, Aposphaeria amaranthis for tumble pigweed, etc. Sources of host resistance to various insects and diseases have been identified in cotton, apple and strawberry. Ergovaline free tall fescue accessions which retain resistance to insect and nematode pests were identified. A predictive model for emergence of selected weed species was developed. Genetic transformation of Colletotrichum gloesporides reduced its pathogenicity and aggressiveness to northern joint vetch. Tobacco budworm and cotton bollworm tended to avoid spray deposits of Bacillus thuringiensis. Tannins adversely affected the efficacy of nuclear polyhedrosis virus. The overwintering biology to Orius insidious was elucidated. Soybean maturity Groups III-IV generally escaped damaging populations of lepidopterous pests. PB: 9501 TO 9512 CARTWRIGHT, D. K.
