Dr. Stephen A. Drake

PRESENT POSITION:

1991 - Present - Dr. Drake is employed as a scientist in NASA's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archival Research Center (HEASARC) under the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) Cooperative Program in Space Sciences (CPSS) as part of a cooperative agreement with NASA. The HEASARC is part of the Exploration of the Universe Division (EUD) of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)and is situated in GSFC's Building 2 in Greenbelt, Maryland. At the HEASARC, in addition to carrying out his scientific research on a variety of stars including active binaries and chemically peculiar stars, Dr. Drake is currently working on maintaining the integrity of the HEASARC's 6 Terabytes (TB) of online data, on ingesting new tables and catalogs into the HEASARC's Browse online database systems, on maintaining a number of pages on its Website including a high-energy astronomy meetings page, a proposal deadlines and other important dates page, a high-energy astronomy history page, and acting as the HEASARC Scientist for the EUVE, XMM-Newton, CGRO and Integral missions, and on answering questions sent to the HEASARC e-mail question line. Dr. Drake has also compiled a list of publications containing atomic physics data (primarily in the soft X-ray band) for the various ions of Fe.

Stellar Atmospheres, Winds, and Coronae
Stars: Active Binaries, CP Stars, Active Dwarf Stars

Dr. Drake's major current area of interest is in the X-ray coronae around late-type stars, and the X-ray emission regions (however produced) around early-type stars. Previously, he had extensively studied the radio continuum emission from a wide variety of different types of stars.

Going from most (~100 solar masses) to least (~0.001 solar masses) massive, the types of stars that he has studied include Eta Carinae (one of the most massive stars in our Galaxy), OB stars in the Cygnus OB2 Associations, Magnetic Bp and Ap stars, Algol binary systems in which one component fills its Roche Lobe, F stars with thin convection zones, classic solar-type stars such as Alpha Centauri, active binary systems such as the RS CVn types, dwarf M stars (including the wonderfully named rapidly rotating dMe star `Speedy Mic'), and the recently discovered Jovian-mass objects orbiting nearby solar-type stars such as 51 Pegasi.

X-ray spectroscopy of stars can give information about the temperature and density structures, their scale heights, and the prevailing elemental abundances in those parts of their atmospheres where the highest temperatures (1-100 million degrees K) are found. Low- and medium spectral resolution observations made by X-ray detectors on missions such as ROSAT and ASCA yielded in some cases very surprising results, e.g., that the elemental abundances in the coronae of many late-type stars are not the same as those that prevail in their cooler underlying photospheres. These anomalous abundances have been generally confirmed by the high-resolution detectors on the currently operating X-ray observatories, Chandra (AXAF) and XMM-Newton, although there is still little idea as to the physical mechanism(s) that are responsible for them. Dr. Drake is actively working on this topic.
