Bloom-forming toxic cyanobacteria occur worldwide in nutrient-enriched freshwater. Concentrations of microcystin (the toxic form of cyanobacteria) has exceeded World Health Organization recommendations in some Great Lakes. Microcystis can create toxins that contaminate recreational and drinking water.
