Islamic Studies, Islam,
Arabic, and Religion

Islam literally means surrender, implying surrender to God. And a muslim, literally, is one who is surrendering, specifically, one who is surrendering to God. This website, the academic website of Dr. Alan Godlas, professor of Religion at the University of Georgia, provides a scholarly overview of Islam and related subjects.

of the Department of Religion at the University of Georgia

This Islamic Studies website covers the areas of Islam, Arabic, and Religion (focusing on Western religions). It is particularly intended to be of use for students and teachers at all levels, as well for members of the general public who wish to get a non-polemical view of Islam (including Sunni Islam, Shi'ism, and Sufism) and to a lesser extent of Judaism and Christianity. You can send me (Dr. Godlas) email by this link. Please inform me of any broken links.

Note that the vast majority of religion sites on the Web are established by committed believers. Although this presents certain problems (one of which is the variable quality of the material), its virtue is that the discourse of believers is directly accessible to students of religion. The articles linked on this site have been written both by Muslim and non-Muslim scholars as well as informed believers. Of course, the views expressed in the links connected to this site are not necessarily the views of Dr. Godlas or the University of Georgia.

In these times, a breath of fresh air is provided by
The Muslim Peace Fellowship Visit their site!

In spite of the forces in the world that resist controlling hatred, there are Jewish and Palestinian Christian and Muslim women who are working together for peace. You can become informed of and participate in their work through their website The Jerusalem Link.

Do you ever wonder what Cat Stevens has been singing since his conversion (reversion) to Islam? If you have Real Player, see Yusuf Islam (Link fixed, 28 September 2001.) And while you're at it, it certainly wouldn't hurt to bring the spirit of 1971 into the present and listen to him urging us to get on the Peace Train.
