A method for stimulating the axonal outgrowth of central nervous system neurons following traumatic brain injury in a mammal, comprising intrathecal administration into the central nervous system of the mammal a pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of an effective amount of inosine such that axonal outgrowth is stimulated in vivo.
