During the Spring of 2005, I was awarded the honor of participating in the Research Alliance for Math and Science (RAMS) program at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This program has provided me with the opportunity to conduct the latest technology research using HA-OSCAR in Computer Science & Mathematics Divsion. My faculty mentor, Dr. Daniel Okunbor, ORNL research staff mentors, and a team of researchers have built an OSCAR cluster consisting of 2-4 workstations. The Open Source Cluster Application Resources (OSCAR) is a fully integrated software stack designed for the building, maintaining, and using a Linux cluster for high performance computing. Within the past few years, new variants of OSCAR, namely HA-OSCAR, SSS-OSCAR, SSI-OSCAR, and thin-OSCAR evolved addressing respectively, high-availability, Scalable Systems Software, Single System Image, and diskless-based clusters. The focus of my research will be HA-OSCAR. In this effort, I will build an OSCAR cluster, upgrade its reliability using HA-OSCAR and benchmark the resulting product. The primary goal is to utilize lessons learned in preparing HA-OSCAR user’s guide as my deliverable.
