CHAOS: Linux from Livermore

Preface

Scope:

This manual explains the goals and user-relevant features of CHAOS, which is Livermore Computing's Clustered High-Availability Operating System (a locally modified version of Linux with associated system support software). This document explains the goals of the CHAOS project, then introduces the local modifications of the operating-system kernel, the collection of system-administration tools tuned to local cluster-management needs, and the other broad aspects of CHAOS service to users (such as file systems and resource management).

For a comparison of local Linux features with features of other LC operating systems (especially AIX), see Linux Differences. For details on the user tools provided by the Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management (SLURM), see LC's SLURM Reference Manual.

Availability:

Some version of CHAOS now runs on every LC Linux cluster, open and secure.
