Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 4, 2007):
The Aline Barnsdall Complex (or Hollyhock House) and associated buildings and structures are nationally significant as part of Frank Lloyd Wrights first commission in Los Angeles, California. The projects centerpiece was oil heiress Aline Barnsdalls residence, largely built between 1919 and 1921. The visual character of the Hollyhock House expressed Wrights transition away from the dwellings of Wrights "First Mature" or "Oak Park" period (1900-1912), yet it was the buildings more understated elements that had impact on later residential design. Its free-flowing living areas and integrated accommodation between indoor and outdoor living became elemental features of Post-war houses.
